2008 Inuvik/Canada Tour

Itinerary

Saturday, July 12, 2008
Day One:

Arrival in Anchorage, welcome dinner, and an evening in one of Alaska's largest and most beautiful cities.

Sunday, July 13, 2008
Day Two:

(328 miles)
Anchorage to Tok. Ride the Glenn Highway: A National Forest Scenic Byway, and considered one of the top 10 rides in North America. See glaciers, wild rivers, and mountains as far as the eye can see.

Monday, July 14, 2008
Day Three:

(171 miles)
Tok to Eagle. Our first taste of dirt. Visit the little gold rush town of Chicken, so named at the turn of the century because no one knew how to spell ptarmigan (Alaska’s state bird that resembles the chicken)! This is the place that time forgot. No phones, but they have Wi-Fi internet! See the enormous Pedro Gold Dredge. We’ll follow the winding Taylor Highway (dirt) all the way to the banks of the Yukon River at Eagle. Today, we’ll ride on mostly dirt and compacted gravel roads. Paving is expected in the same year that pigs begin to fly.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008
Day Four:

(172 miles)
Eagle to Dawson City. We’ll cross into Canada and ride the Top of the World Highway that skirts the crests of hills, providing absolutely stunning views on the valleys below – to the picturesque and historic Dawson City, made famous by the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. We’ll end the day with a trip across the Yukon River by ferry.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Day Five:

(228 miles)
Dawson City to Eagle Plains. Today we begin to distance ourselves from civilization. We’ll ride the Dempster Highway, one of the most adventuresome highways in the world. Through the peaceful splendor of the Ogilvie Mountains to Eagle Plains, the scenery here is unimaginable.

Thursday, July 17, 2008
Day Six:

(227 miles)
Eagle Plains to Inuvik. We’ll cross a time zone, two rivers, and the Arctic Circle today. No sign of humans anywhere as we ride across untouched lands. The pristine, untouched landscape in this area has got to be seen to be believed.

Friday, July 18, 2008
Day Seven:

Inuvik Free Day. This day is yours – as we stand at the top of the continent. Kick back. Explore the area. Check out Inuvik’s “igloo church” or their annual The Great Northern Arts Festival. Fly to the native town of Tuktiuktuk on the Artic Ocean, the “Tijuana of the North”. Continuous days - the sun never goes below the horizon.

Saturday, July 19, 2008
Day Eight:

(227 miles)
Inuvik to Eagle Plains. The first leg of our journey back home. We’ll still be in the middle of nowhere, which is right where we want to be. No other humans as far as the eye can see. Except us. Yeah!

Sunday, July 20, 2008
Day Nine:

(228 miles)
Eagle Plains to Dawson City. Continuing our journey Southwest back to civilization along the Dempster Highway, Canada’s first all-weather road to cross the Arctic Circle, where the mountains meet the sky. A beautiful ride and nice way to acclimate ourselves back to humanity.

Monday, July 21, 2008
Day Ten:

Dawson City Free Day. A chance to explore what we missed on our way up. Explore the mining areas surrounding King Solomon’s Dome: the true heart of gold rush territory! Try your luck at historic Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall. Wander the same streets of Dawson City that inspired world famous authors Jack London, Pierre Berton, and poet Robert Service. Dawson City has it all: great food, great accommodations, quality shopping, and a unique nightlife. Of course, no visit to Dawson City is complete without trying your hand at panning for gold.

Tuesday, July 22, 2008
Day Eleven:

(343 miles)
Dawson City to Tok. We’ll ride straight to Tok on the Top of the World (mostly gravel) and Taylor (paved & gravel) highways on this leg.

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Day Twelve:

(328 miles)
Farewell Dinner
Tok to Anchorage. Our last long ride along the scenically beautiful Glenn Highway before heading back to our starting point!
We'll have a final meal together while reflecting on our one-of-a-kind journey.

Day Thirteen

Back Home
Say our goodbyes and fly back home.
